MEV protection on Solana trading bots sends your trade through a private route, usually Jito or a set of trusted validators, so attackers can't see it early and "sandwich" it. It reduces sandwich risk; it doesn't remove it. Your slippage setting still decides how much an attacker can take if they do get in.
Risk notice: Crypto trading is high risk and memecoins can go to zero in minutes. Trading bots use hot wallets. This page is not financial advice; only trade what you can afford to lose.
This guide explains what MEV is, how sandwich attacks work on Solana, what Jito bundles are, and what each bot's MEV toggle does, based on Solana, Jito and bot documentation checked September 26, 2026.
What MEV means
MEV stands for maximal extractable value: profit someone can make by choosing the order of transactions in a block. Some MEV is neutral, such as arbitrage between two pools. Some is harmful to you. On Solana, the harmful kind that affects memecoin traders is mostly the sandwich attack.
How a sandwich attack works
Helius's Solana MEV report (January 2025) calls sandwich attacks "the most notorious form of toxic MEV" and says they "exploit traders who place orders on AMMs or bonding curves with high slippage tolerances." A sandwich has three parts:
- Front-run. The attacker sees your pending buy and buys the same token first, pushing the price up.
- Your trade. Your buy fills at the higher price, as long as it's within your slippage limit.
- Back-run. The attacker sells right after you, at the price your buy pushed up.
The attacker's profit comes out of your fill. The more slippage you allow, the more room they have. Jupiter's support center notes that "unreasonably high slippage (>20%) led to sandwich attacks" (Jupiter).
Why sandwiches happen on Solana without a public mempool
Solana has no Ethereum-style public mempool where anyone can watch pending trades. Jito used to run a mempool service, but it shut that feature down in March 2024 because it enabled sandwich attacks (CoinDesk).
Sandwiching continued anyway. According to Helius, attacks now come from private mempools, modified validator clients and deals between searchers and validators. One sandwich program it tracked ran 1.55 million attacks in 30 days (December 2024 to January 2025) and took about 65,880 SOL. In June 2024, the Solana Foundation removed more than 30 validator operators from its delegation program for taking part in mempools that allowed sandwiching (CoinDesk).
The practical point: whoever sees your transaction before it lands can potentially sandwich it. MEV protection tries to limit who sees it.
What Jito bundles and tips are
Jito makes the Jito-Solana validator client. Helius reported that over 92% of Solana validators by stake ran it as of January 2025. Jito's block engine accepts two kinds of submissions, per Jito's docs:
- Bundles: "groups of transactions (max 5)" that execute "sequentially and atomically meaning all-or-nothing." If one fails, none land. Bundles compete in an auction on tips, and a bundle can still fail to land.
- Single transactions (sendTransaction): forwarded directly to validators, with MEV protection by default, per the docs.
A Jito tip is a SOL payment to one of Jito's tip accounts. The minimum is 1,000 lamports, but Jito warns that in busy periods the minimum "might not be sufficient." Bots often call the tip a "bribe". More on tips in Solana priority fees and slippage.
What the MEV toggle does in each bot
Every bot implements "MEV protection" differently. Here is what each one's docs say:
| Bot | Modes | What the docs say |
|---|---|---|
| Axiom | Off, Reduced, Secure | Reduced routes through Jito "but rogue validators may still create MEV exposure"; Secure waits for whitelisted validators and may be slower (Axiom) |
| Trojan | On/off for buys and sells | Your transaction "will be private and can't be attacked by MEV bots"; uses validator tips from your gas settings (Trojan) |
| BONKbot | Turbo, Secure | Turbo uses Jito only when it's fastest ("If regular is faster, the tx is not protected"); Secure protects "at all costs, even if transaction is slower" (BONKbot) |
| Photon | Fast, Secure (Smart-MEV) | Sends to Jito or to partner bloXroute depending on your bribe size (Photon) |
| GMGN | Turbo, Anti-MEV | Anti-MEV uses an "anti-MEV RPC" and is "slightly slower"; needs a priority fee of at least 0.002 SOL (GMGN) |
| FOMO | No user toggle | FOMO says it routes trades through DFlow with MEV protection (FOMO) |
Two patterns stand out. First, protection usually costs speed: the protected route waits for a trusted validator's turn. Second, "protection" usually depends on who the bot trusts, not on a guarantee from the network.
What MEV protection doesn't do
- It doesn't make a bad token safe. A rug pull or a dev dump isn't MEV. See how to spot a rug pull on Solana.
- It doesn't guarantee a good price. Price can move for normal reasons between your click and your fill, especially on thin tokens.
- It doesn't make your transaction land. A protected route can be slower, and a bundle can lose the tip auction.
- It can fail. GMGN's anti-MEV nodes on BNB Chain were sandwiched for about 13 hours in October 2025, affecting 729 transactions. GMGN said it compensated users in full (Crypto Economy).
- It doesn't protect copy trades from the leader. A wallet you copy can sell into its followers without any MEV involved. See copy trading Solana wallets explained.
Sensible settings
These are general principles, not trading advice:
- Turn MEV protection on for buys where your bot offers it. Axiom's docs say it's "only necessary for buy transactions" on most tokens, because buys are what get sandwiched.
- Keep slippage as low as the token allows. Protection plus 50% slippage still leaves a lot of room if something slips through.
- Pick the strict mode (Axiom Secure, BONKbot Secure) unless speed truly matters for that trade.
- Expect to pay a tip. Protected routes rely on tips, and too small a tip means slower fills.
- Recheck after updates. Bots change routing and defaults. Look at the settings page, not a months-old screenshot.
